This photo was captured after a hike and a little bit of rockclimbing (with camera gear on back) into a hidden grotto in the Blue Mountains, NSW. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThe light streaming into the grotto down the waterfall shaft lit this tiny fern clinging to life on the vertical edge of the rocks. Clinging to life, life that was only possible as they was where the light hit to rock. It was established during the gold rush in the mid-1800s and was once one of the largest towns in the area, with a population of over 10,000 people at its peak. Sofala was the site of the first payable gold discovery in Australia in 1851 which sparked the Australian gold rush, led to a surge in immigration and transformed the economy of Australia, making it one of the wealthiest countries in the world at the time!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe whole area is made up of these gentle rolling hills, dotted with various houses, barns, cottages and shacks. Small details that would have appeared quite ordinary later in the day suddenly became an important part of the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThat foreground became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eRather than concentrating solely on the distant sunrise, I positioned the camera to make the shoreline part of the journey through the image. As each surge retreated, seawater spilled from the edges in a series of temporary cascades. For just a few seconds, the coastline appeared to have its own waterfalls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThen the next wave arrived and everything changed again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eI used a longer exposure to capture that movement without completely removing the character of the sea. I still wanted the photograph to feel powerful. The water needed to move through the frame while the dark rock remained hard, detailed and immovable around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eBlack and white was a natural choice.
