This photo was captured after a hike and a little bit of rockclimbing (with camera gear on back) into a hidden grotto in the Blue Mountains, NSW. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThe light streaming into the grotto down the waterfall shaft lit this tiny fern clinging to life on the vertical edge of the rocks. Clinging to life, life that was only possible as they was where the light hit to rock. While still technically Summer, Autumn had certainly started to change the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eSetting an early wake up alarm I ventured out to shoot the Turon River in the old gold mining town of Sofala. Sofala live dup to its golden history with the sun casting gold beams across the river and the single tree on the embankment radiating hues of gold. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eA light mist drifted across the water from the shadows out to the full sunshine. Like everyone else, normal life stopped, plans disappeared and opportunities to simply head out with the camera became rare.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eDuring one period of eased restrictions, photographers were again able to venture out for work. I took that opportunity to spend a night photographing Sydney Harbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThe resulting images then sat dormant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eIn many ways, they waited just as we all did.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eSome time later, I was approached by a private collector looking for something unique for their home. Their brief gave me a reason to revisit those photographs and consider them differently.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eRather than simply creating another beautiful Sydney Harbour panorama, I wanted the finished artwork to carry something of the atmosphere and emotions of the time in which the photographs had been made.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThe Sydney skyline, Opera House and Harbour Bridge were familiar landmarks, but our relationship with places like these had changed. Instead, it provides a different perspective on it through one of Australia's most familiar landscapes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eFor me, that makes “Pandemic Harbour” more than a photograph of Sydney. Towering views are replaced by enclosed sandstone walls, hanging ferns, pools of water and the small details that thrive in the protected environment of the canyon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThis scene immediately caught my attention because of the shape of the pool and the way the surrounding rock naturally framed it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eRather than photograph a traditional wide landscape, I wanted the composition to follow the canyon itself. The vertical PanoScape format allowed me to lead the viewer from the flowing water in the foreground, along the reflective pool and deeper into the vegetation beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eA longer exposure softened the movement of the water while leaving the sandstone and ferns beautifully detailed. As each surge retreated, seawater spilled from the edges in a series of temporary cascades. For just a few seconds, the coastline appeared to have its own waterfalls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThen the next wave arrived and everything changed again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eI used a longer exposure to capture that movement without completely removing the character of the sea. I still wanted the photograph to feel powerful. The water needed to move through the frame while the dark rock remained hard, detailed and immovable around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eBlack and white was a natural choice. As the sun climbed, its light began filtering through the trees and illuminating the mist from behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eFor a short period, the whole landscape seemed to glow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eI positioned the trees against the strongest part of the light, allowing the sun to break through the foliage rather than dominate an open sky.
