“Golden Sunrise Burst” captures one of those fleeting Hawkesbury mornings when fog, water and first light combine to completely transform the landscape.

The rising sun breaks through a stand of trees, creating a brilliant burst of golden light that spills across the mist-covered paddocks. Below, floodwater catches fragments of that light, while layers of timber fencing gradually disappear into the fog.

The cool blue of the early morning sky gives way to warm gold near the horizon, creating a beautiful transition of colour across the panorama. Silhouetted trees and fences provide structure within the softness, giving the photograph its distinctly rural character.

Presented in my PanoScape format, the wide composition allows those layers to unfold across the frame — from shadow and reflection in the foreground through the mist to the glowing sunrise beyond.

The Story Behind the Shot

The Richmond Lowlands have long been one of my favourite places to photograph.

It isn't a landscape that needs towering mountains or dramatic coastlines to create something special. Its character comes from the paddocks, old fences, trees, waterways, fog and changing light — and from never quite knowing what the morning will deliver.

This was one of those mornings when everything came together.

Fog had settled low across the landscape and floodwater remained around the paddocks, creating reflections where ordinarily there would be grass. As the sun climbed, its light began filtering through the trees and illuminating the mist from behind.

For a short period, the whole landscape seemed to glow.

I positioned the trees against the strongest part of the light, allowing the sun to break through the foliage rather than dominate an open sky. The surrounding mist softened everything beyond it, while the repeating fences created layers that gave the scene depth.

The detail photographs reveal another side of the morning. Look beyond the grand sunrise and there are quieter scenes within it — gates emerging from the fog, reflections beneath the fences and even a small kangaroo standing almost unnoticed amongst the layers.

That is something I have always enjoyed about photographing the Hawkesbury. There is often another photograph hiding inside the photograph.

Why It Matters

“Golden Sunrise Burst” represents a landscape I know well, but one that never seems to look exactly the same twice.

Fog changes familiar places. It removes distractions, separates layers and turns ordinary objects such as fences, gates and trees into strong graphic elements. Add the warmth of sunrise and suddenly a working rural landscape becomes something almost dreamlike.

There is nostalgia in this photograph too.

The timber fences, open paddocks and morning mist speak strongly of the Richmond Lowlands and the rural character of the Hawkesbury. For people who know this landscape, there is an immediate familiarity. For those who don't, it offers a glimpse of a quieter Australian morning.

Look closely and the photograph becomes more than the obvious sunburst. There are reflections, silhouettes and small discoveries throughout the scene.

That is why this image matters to me. It isn't simply a photograph of a beautiful sunrise. It is a photograph of place, atmosphere and a landscape I have returned to many times with a camera in hand.

The Print

With its transition from deep foreground shadows through delicate mist to intense golden sunlight, “Golden Sunrise Burst” relies on preserving a broad range of colour and subtle tonal detail in the finished artwork.

I print the photograph in-house on premium Epson Gloss Photo Paper using archival Epson inks, carefully reproducing the warm sunrise tones, cooler morning blues and fine detail within the mist and reflections.
