Description
“Blowhole Point Power” captures the raw energy of the ocean surging through the rugged volcanic coastline at Kiama’s Blowhole Point.
Rather than concentrating on the famous blowhole itself, this photograph looks across the surrounding rock formations where powerful seas pour over the dark cliffs, creating temporary waterfalls before being swallowed again by the turbulent ocean below.
Presented in black and white, the scene becomes a study of movement, texture and contrast. Solid, fractured rock surrounds a mass of moving water, while the longer exposure reveals the direction and flow of the sea as it races through the landscape.
The panoramic composition gives the scene room to breathe, from the cascading water along the rock face to the isolated formation offshore, creating a dramatic portrait of a coastline continually shaped by the sea.
The Story Behind the Shot
Kiama’s Blowhole is one of the South Coast’s best-known landmarks, but when the ocean is alive, there is far more happening around Blowhole Point than the spectacle everyone has come to see.
On this occasion, it was the interaction between the waves and the surrounding rock that grabbed my attention.
Large volumes of water were being driven onto the rock platform. As each surge retreated, seawater spilled from the edges in a series of temporary cascades. For just a few seconds, the coastline appeared to have its own waterfalls.
Then the next wave arrived and everything changed again.
I used a longer exposure to capture that movement without completely removing the character of the sea. I still wanted the photograph to feel powerful. The water needed to move through the frame while the dark rock remained hard, detailed and immovable around it.
Black and white was a natural choice. Removing the colour stripped the scene back to its essential elements — rock, water, light and movement.
The two accompanying detail photographs take that idea even further, isolating the cascades and swirling water to reveal patterns within the larger landscape that could easily be missed when standing before such a powerful ocean.
Why It Matters
“Blowhole Point Power” is a photograph about opposing forces.
The rocks appear permanent. The ocean never stops moving.
One is dark, sharp and heavily textured; the other becomes soft, bright and almost ethereal through the longer exposure. Yet over time, it is the water that shapes the rock.
That contrast is what holds my attention in this photograph.
Step back and you see the scale and power of the coastline. Move closer and the smaller details begin to emerge — individual cascades pouring over the cliffs, channels carved through the rock and currents twisting through the water.
It is a reminder that landscapes aren't static. They are constantly being changed by the forces acting upon them, sometimes violently and sometimes almost imperceptibly.
“Blowhole Point Power” brings that drama into a space without relying on colour. Its strength comes from tone, form, texture and movement, making it a striking piece of Australian coastal fine art.

The monochrome character of “Blowhole Point Power” demands careful reproduction, particularly through the deep blacks, detailed rock textures, luminous water and broad range of grey tones that give the photograph its depth.
I produce the artwork in-house on premium Epson Gloss Photo Paper using archival Epson inks, allowing those subtle tonal transitions and fine details to remain an important part of the finished photograph.
