The Underneath by Felicity Bates is a captivating photorealistic seascape that captures the ocean from a unique perspective — both above and below the waterline. Inspired by the coastal waters of the Central Coast NSW, the painting reveals a curling wave forming beneath a wide blue sky, while below the surface deep emerald tones fade into sandy seabed and scattered rocks.

The composition creates a beautiful balance between movement and calm, inviting the viewer into the quiet world beneath the wave while still feeling the energy building above.

The Underneath also holds a special story for the gallery. Much of the painting was created live during Felicity’s Meet the Artist event at Scapes of Art, where visitors watched the artwork develop in real time while chatting with the artist about her process and inspiration. The final finishing touches and protective varnish were applied afterwards in Felicity’s studio.
