📖 The Story Behind the Shot

Some photographs arrive unexpectedly.

I discovered this waterfall while exploring Centennial Glen near Blackheath in the Blue Mountains. Tucked away within a narrow sandstone canyon, it felt more like entering a secret chamber than finding a waterfall.

The confined space created challenges photographically, but it also presented opportunities. The towering rock walls filtered the light, leaving only subtle highlights dancing across the water and stone. The more I explored the scene, the more I became drawn to the textures and shapes rather than the colours.

Black and white felt like the natural choice.

Removing colour allowed the eye to focus on the relationship between the flowing water and the rugged sandstone. The smooth waterfall contrasts beautifully against the weathered rock, while the swirling pool in the foreground adds a sense of movement and mystery.

This is one of those locations that rewards patience. The longer I stood there, listening to the water echo through the canyon, the more the photograph revealed itself.
