Mark Kingston is an Australian realist painter known for detailed, atmospheric works inspired by beaches, coastal landscapes and the changing character of light. Based on the Central Coast, his paintings balance careful observation with a strong sense of colour, place and mood.
Across more than 40 group and solo exhibitions, Mark has developed a recognisable approach to landscape painting, particularly scenes of sweeping skies, luminous water and the meeting point between land and sea. His work has also been acquired by corporate collections, including the Roche Group.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Sydney and a Master of Art from the University of New South Wales. Alongside his studio practice, he has taught and lectured in visual and creative arts programs, bringing decades of practical experience to both his painting and arts education.
His work has been featured in Australian newspapers and magazines including Australian Artist Magazine, and he has been selected as a finalist in a range of recognised art prizes. At Scapes of Art, Mark’s coastal and seascape paintings reflect a shared connection to place, atmosphere and the Australian shoreline.
Creative Process
The rugged beauty of the Australian landscape has inspired artists for generations. My love of the Australian terrain began in childhood, spent enjoying the sun and surf of Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
I am passionate about the process of painting, particularly the interplay of light, form and colour to create convincing illusions of depth, texture and realism.
Inspiration can strike at any moment, which is why I always take my camera and sketchbook on road trips along the Australian coast. When a landscape captures my imagination, I photograph it from various angles and make quick sketches to record its character and mood.
Once I return to my studio, I review all my photos and sketches. I select those that really capture my imagination to use as reference for oil on canvas paintings. I then prime the selected canvas and transfer my sketch to it. I am happy to start painting on any section of the canvas and render it to a high level of realism before focusing on the remaining sections of the painting. Finally, I use glazing and dry-brushing techniques to refine details, harmonise colours and create a cohesive, seamless painting.
