Emerald Gems
Jenny Dixon Beach, Norah Head, Central Coast NSW
🖼️ Description
“Emerald Gems” reveals a hidden world found along the shoreline at Jenny Dixon Beach. Captured at sunrise, this intimate coastal landscape transforms a section of algae-covered rock platform into a scene rich with colour, texture, and movement.
Brilliant shades of emerald, lime, moss, and olive green stretch across the ancient sandstone formations, while ribbons of flowing seawater weave their way between the rocks. The soft motion of the water contrasts beautifully against the solid textures of the reef, creating a photograph that feels both dynamic and peaceful.
Named by Cass, “Emerald Gems” celebrates the small treasures often overlooked along the coastline.
📖 The Story Behind the Shot
One of the things I enjoy most about photography is discovering landscapes within landscapes.
While many people are drawn to the horizon at sunrise, I often find myself looking much closer to my feet. On this particular morning at Jenny Dixon Beach, the retreating tide exposed a fascinating network of channels carved through the rock platform.
The rocks were covered in vibrant green algae, glowing under the soft morning light. As each wave receded, streams of water flowed through the natural pathways, creating elegant patterns and leading lines that constantly changed with every passing surge.
Using a slower shutter speed allowed me to capture that movement, turning the flowing water into delicate ribbons that connect each section of the composition. The result is a photograph that feels almost abstract, inviting the viewer to explore the textures, shapes, and colours rather than focusing on a traditional coastal vista.
When Cass first saw the image, she immediately called the algae-covered rocks "Emerald Gems." The name stuck instantly. Looking across the scene, it's easy to see why. The glowing green formations appear like precious stones scattered across the shoreline, revealed only briefly between the tides.

🌿 Why It Matters
“Emerald Gems” is a reminder that nature's beauty is not always found in grand landscapes or dramatic skies.
Sometimes the most captivating scenes are the smaller details hidden beneath our feet — patterns shaped by water, textures carved by time, and colours that appear for only a short window before the tide returns.
The rich greens, flowing water, and intricate textures create an artwork that rewards repeated viewing. The longer you look, the more details emerge.
For lovers of the coast, nature, and abstract landscapes, this piece offers a fresh perspective on the beauty that exists within Australia's shoreline.
