A single bright fern rises amongst moss-covered rocks as clear mountain water winds its way through the landscape. A slow shutter speed transforms the flowing stream into soft ribbons of movement, contrasting with the intricate detail and vibrant green of the fern.

Rather than a grand landscape, this is an intimate view of nature — water, rock, moss and new growth coming together in a quiet corner of the bush.

The Story Behind the Shot

This photograph came at the end of a hike into the national park around Mount Wilson on an overly hot summer day.

The heat made the walk considerably harder, but getting down amongst the streams and dense vegetation offered a completely different environment from the exposed conditions above.

I was exploring the flowing water and looking for compositions amongst the rocks when this little fern caught my attention.

It wasn't towering over the landscape. It wasn't particularly dramatic. It was simply there, standing brightly against the darker moss-covered rocks while the stream flowed around it.

And somehow, it looked happy.

That small observation became the photograph.

I positioned the camera low enough to make the fern an important part of the composition and used a slow shutter speed to record the movement of the stream. The water softened into flowing lines around the rocks while the fern remained crisp and full of detail.

The contrast gave the scene its character: something delicate and still surrounded by water that never stops moving.

Sometimes landscape photography is about enormous vistas and spectacular light.

Other times, it is about noticing one little fern.

Why It Matters

“Happy Fern and Water” is a reminder that nature doesn't always need to be spectacular to be worth noticing.

There is life everywhere in this photograph. Water continually reshapes the landscape, moss slowly covers the rocks and a small fern reaches towards whatever light finds its way through the canopy.

For me, that little fern represents resilience and optimism. Surrounded by rock and constantly moving water, it simply grows where it finds an opportunity.

There is also something calming about following the movement of the water through the photograph. Your eye can wander through the scene, discovering textures, shapes and smaller details rather than being immediately pulled towards one grand landmark.

It captures the quieter side of the Blue Mountains — the world found beneath the canopy and down beside the streams, where slowing down often reveals far more than rushing towards the next destination.
