“Misty Wilson Falls” captures the wild, layered beauty of a Blue Mountains waterfall hidden amongst the dense forests of Mount Wilson.

Water tumbles down multiple levels of dark, weathered rock, dividing into smaller cascades before gathering again below. Moss-covered fallen timber cuts dramatically across the scene, its rich greens and earthy tones contrasting against the deep rock and luminous white water.

Presented as a vertical PanoScape, the composition follows the natural height of the waterfall, allowing the eye to travel from the forest canopy above, down through each cascade and into the tangled, moss-covered landscape below.

The Story Behind the Shot

Waterfalls are rarely just about the waterfall.

For me, much of their character comes from everything surrounding them — the rock, fallen trees, ferns, moss, mist and the slightly chaotic landscape created by years of water continually reshaping its environment.

I photographed “Misty Wilson Falls” while hiking through the Mount Wilson area of the Blue Mountains. The conditions gave the forest that wonderful damp atmosphere where colours become richer, moss seems almost luminous and the dark rock takes on a beautiful sheen.

What immediately appealed to me was the way the water found multiple paths down the rock face.

Rather than one perfectly formed waterfall, there are cascades everywhere. The large moss-covered fallen tree then cuts diagonally through all those vertical lines, giving the photograph another layer of depth and helping reveal the scale of the scene.

The vertical PanoScape format was a natural choice. It allowed me to follow the waterfall rather than compress it into a conventional landscape frame, capturing both its height and the wonderfully untidy forest surrounding it.

Why It Matters

“Misty Wilson Falls” is about discovering the beauty that exists in wild places precisely because they haven't been tidied up.

Fallen trees remain where nature puts them. Moss gradually claims the timber and rocks. Water finds another route. The forest simply continues.

There is a wonderful sense of renewal in that.

The combination of flowing white water, deep blacks, wet rock and vibrant green moss also makes this an artwork capable of bringing life into a space. It has enough drama to draw attention, but the natural greens and flowing water retain a feeling of calm.

The vertical PanoScape format is particularly suited to those narrow walls in a home that can be difficult to fill with conventional landscape artwork. Between doorways, beside a fireplace, at the end of a hallway or on a tall narrow wall, its proportions allow the photograph to make use of height without requiring a large expanse of wall.

It can also be a beautiful way to brighten a darker corner, bringing the greens of the forest and luminous waterfall into a part of the home that might otherwise be overlooked.

“Misty Wilson Falls” is produced in-house on premium Epson Gloss Photo Paper using archival Epson inks, retaining the rich greens of the moss, depth within the darker rock and delicate tonal detail of the flowing water.
