A magnificent stand of mature Australian gums anchors the composition, their twisting trunks and sprawling branches catching the first warm light of the day. Beyond them, layers of hills fall away into the distance as pockets of morning mist drift through the valleys.

The road provides a natural invitation into the photograph. Rather than simply observing the landscape, there is a feeling of travelling through it — wondering what might be waiting around the next bend.

The Story Behind the Shot

Some photographs begin with a destination. Others happen because something along the journey makes you stop.

“Sunrise Country Drive” is very much about the latter.

Travelling through the countryside early in the morning, the combination of the road, these wonderful old gum trees and the developing sunrise immediately caught my attention.

The trees were the key.

As the low morning light reached across the hillside, it picked up the extraordinary colours and textures within their trunks. Warm oranges, creams and browns appeared amongst the bark, while the twisting branches created an intricate canopy above.

Beyond them, the landscape became progressively softer. Mist hung amongst the distant hills and the morning light filtered through the valley, creating an entirely different atmosphere to the strongly detailed foreground.

I composed the photograph so the country road would lead through those two worlds — beginning amongst the trees before carrying the eye down the hill and into the morning light beyond.

The closer detail reveals just how much character exists within those gums. Their scars, textures, twisting trunks and interlocking branches tell their own story within the wider landscape.

Sometimes the photograph is waiting at the destination.

Sometimes it's waiting beside the road.

Why It Matters

There is a particular freedom associated with an Australian country road.

You don't necessarily know what is around the next corner, and that is part of its appeal.

“Sunrise Country Drive” captures that feeling of journey, discovery and possibility. The road becomes more than a compositional element; it represents the temptation to keep going and see what the landscape reveals next.

The old gum trees bring another layer to the photograph. They have clearly stood on this hillside through countless seasons, droughts, storms and cold High Country mornings. Against that sense of permanence, the mist and sunrise are fleeting — present for only a short time before the day changes completely.

That combination gives the image its character: ancient trees, an open road and a moment of beautiful light that will never occur in exactly the same way again.
