“Sunrise Glow on Pebbles” captures the warmth of first light as it reaches across the coastline at Batemans Bay on the NSW South Coast.

Golden sunlight catches the wet rocks and scattered pebbles along the shoreline, illuminating their textures and colours against the cooler blues of the ocean. In the distance, the rising sun breaks through the trees, adding another small burst of warmth to the coastal landscape.

Presented in my vertical PanoScape format, the composition begins amongst the pebbles at your feet before leading the eye across the weathered rock shelf, through the water and towards the distant headland.

It is a photograph built around light, texture and discovery.

The Story Behind the Shot

Sunrise photography often has us looking towards the horizon, waiting for the sky to explode with colour.

But sometimes the best light is happening behind you, beside you or directly beneath your feet.

On this morning at Batemans Bay, the low sunlight began skimming across the shoreline, catching the wet rocks and individual pebbles in beautiful warm light. Small details that would have appeared quite ordinary later in the day suddenly became an important part of the landscape.

That foreground became the photograph.

Rather than concentrating solely on the distant sunrise, I positioned the camera to make the shoreline part of the journey through the image. The vertical PanoScape composition allowed me to start with those tiny shells, stones and pebbles before moving through the larger rock formations, across the water and eventually towards the sun appearing through the trees.

The warm light against the cooler ocean created a natural contrast throughout the scene.

It is one of the things I enjoy most about chasing light. A location can change completely within minutes, and something as simple as a collection of wet pebbles can suddenly become extraordinary when the light finds them.

Why It Matters

“Sunrise Glow on Pebbles” is about looking beyond the obvious.

A spectacular coastline will always attract our attention, but landscapes are made from thousands of smaller details. The rocks, shells and pebbles beneath our feet are every bit a part of the story as the ocean and sky beyond them.

This photograph encourages the eye to travel slowly.

Begin amongst the tiny details in the foreground and there is always somewhere else to explore: the golden highlights across the rocks, reflections in the shallow water, waves breaking further offshore and finally that small burst of sunlight through the trees.

For me, that is what makes landscape photography so rewarding. It teaches us not only to look at a place, but to really see it.
