Pelican Profile
Pelican Time, The Entrance Waterfront, Central Coast NSW
🖼️ Description
“Pelican Profile” is a detailed portrait of one of Australia's most recognisable coastal birds, captured during Pelican Time at The Entrance.
The striking yellow eye, elegant curve of the neck, and intricate textures throughout the beak and pouch combine to create a photograph rich in detail and character. By filling the frame with the pelican's profile, the image encourages the viewer to appreciate the remarkable design and beauty of a bird that many people see regularly but rarely study closely.
📖 The Story Behind the Shot
The pelicans at The Entrance are among the most photographed birds on the Central Coast, yet I am always fascinated by how much detail remains hidden in plain sight.
During Pelican Time, the birds gather in large numbers, often creating chaotic scenes as they compete for food and attention. Amidst that activity, I found myself drawn to a much quieter subject.
This pelican stood calmly amongst the crowd, seemingly unaffected by the commotion around it. The light revealed every feather, every fold within the pouch, and every subtle texture running the length of its enormous beak.
What immediately caught my eye was the balance of the composition. The elegant curve of the neck leads naturally towards the bright yellow eye, while the soft background blur isolates the bird from the busy scene unfolding behind it.
Rather than photographing the spectacle, I chose to focus on the individual.
The closer I looked, the more detail emerged. The delicate feather structure, the fine wrinkles within the pouch, and the subtle colours within the beak transformed a familiar bird into a fascinating portrait subject.
🌿 Why It Matters
One of the joys of photography is learning to see familiar things differently.
Pelicans have become part of the identity of The Entrance. Locals see them regularly and visitors often gather to watch them during feeding time. Yet most people never have the opportunity to study them this closely.
"Pelican Profile" celebrates the beauty that exists within the everyday. It reminds us that extraordinary detail can often be found in the subjects we overlook most often.
The directness of the portrait creates a connection between viewer and subject, while the incredible textures reward those willing to spend time exploring the image. The more you look, the more you discover.
