Pelican Time
Description
Pelican Time
The Entrance Waterfront, Central Coast NSW
🖼️ Description
“Pelican Time” is a portrait of one of Australia's most iconic coastal birds, captured at the location where pelicans have become part of the identity and culture of The Entrance.
Resting quietly beside the water, the pelican appears calm, composed, and almost reflective. The clean composition highlights the elegant shape of the bird, from the graceful curve of its neck to the distinctive beak that makes pelicans instantly recognisable around the world.
Set against the rich blue waters of Tuggerah Lakes, the portrait celebrates the beauty, character, and individuality of a bird that has become synonymous with The Entrance waterfront.
📖 The Story Behind the Shot
Most visitors to The Entrance know the excitement of Pelican Time.
Crowds gather, cameras appear, and before long the pelicans become the centre of attention. It is a spectacle filled with movement, noise, and anticipation.
What attracted me to this image was the complete opposite.
Away from the feeding frenzy and away from the crowd, this pelican sat quietly by the water, seemingly content to watch the world go by. There was no competition, no chaos, and no dramatic action unfolding.
Instead, there was a sense of calm.
The simplicity of the scene immediately appealed to me. The clean background allowed the bird's shape and character to take centre stage, while the soft light revealed the delicate feather detail, subtle colours within the beak, and the remarkable textures that often go unnoticed.
Sometimes wildlife photography is about capturing behaviour.
Sometimes it is simply about appreciating presence.
This photograph became a portrait not just of a pelican, but of a moment of stillness within a location usually known for its activity.
🌿 Why It Matters
There is something universally appealing about moments of quiet observation.
In many ways, this pelican mirrors the experience of sitting beside the water and watching the world slow down for a few moments. It asks nothing of the viewer other than to pause and take notice.
For locals, pelicans are part of daily life. For visitors, they are often one of the lasting memories of a trip to The Entrance. This image celebrates that connection while reminding us that even familiar subjects can reveal unexpected beauty when viewed with fresh eyes.
The calm posture, elegant form, and contemplative mood make this artwork a gentle reminder that there is value in slowing down and simply being present.
