“Rocky Sunrise at Wasp Head” captures the meeting point between an ancient Australian coastline and the constantly moving sea as the first golden light of morning reaches across the landscape.

The broad rock platform dominates the foreground, revealing layers of weathered sandstone, shallow pools, textures and patches of vivid green marine growth. Beyond it, the ocean becomes softer and more fluid, with the movement of the waves transformed into sweeping layers of blue and white.

On the horizon, the rising sun breaks through heavy coastal cloud, flooding the scene with warm golden light and creating a striking contrast between the cool ocean and illuminated rock.

The panoramic PanoScape format gives this expansive South Coast seascape room to breathe, inviting the eye to wander across the rock platform before eventually being drawn towards the sunrise.

The Story Behind the Shot

Wasp Head is the kind of coastline that makes a landscape photographer slow down.

There is so much happening beneath your feet before you even begin looking towards the horizon. Weathered rock, small pools, channels carved by the ocean and changing patches of colour all provide opportunities for compositions.

On this morning, however, the sky was beginning to demand attention as well.

A bank of cloud sat across the horizon as the sun began to rise behind it. Rather than producing a clean sunrise, the cloud scattered and softened the light, creating that wonderful golden glow across the ocean.

I used a longer exposure to record the movement of the water while retaining the extraordinary texture of the rock platform. That contrast became central to the photograph — solid rock against moving water, fine detail against softness, cool blues against warm morning light.

The small pools and channels throughout the foreground then became pathways through the image, gradually leading towards the ocean and that brilliant light on the horizon.

It is exactly the sort of morning that keeps me chasing first light.

Why It Matters

Our Australian coastline is never really still.

Every wave changes something, even if the difference is almost impossible to see. Rock is slowly eroded, pools are filled and emptied, marine life takes hold and the light completely reinvents the landscape from one hour to the next.

“Rocky Sunrise at Wasp Head” brings those different timescales together in one photograph.

There is the permanence of the rock platform, the fleeting movement of the ocean and, above it all, a sunrise that existed in that particular form for only a few minutes.

That combination gives the artwork both energy and tranquillity. From across a room, it reads as an expansive Australian coastal landscape filled with morning light. Move closer and the textures, pools, rock formations and subtle colour variations begin to reveal themselves.

It is an artwork designed not simply to decorate a wall, but to give you somewhere to wander each time you look at it.

Bringing the South Coast Home

“Rocky Sunrise at Wasp Head” is produced in-house on premium Epson Gloss Photo Paper using archival Epson inks, helping reproduce the warm sunrise, cooler ocean tones and intricate detail within the weathered coastal rock.

Each fine art photograph is professionally framed and ready to hang, with a choice of Black, White or Light Timber framing to suit the artwork and surrounding interior.

Its panoramic proportions work particularly well above a lounge, dining setting, bed, sideboard or other wider wall space where the horizontal landscape can become a feature of the room.

Other sizes are available on request.
